The Pelicans wish you a happy Easter!
Before end of term, the Pelican children had a lovely Easter egg scavenger hunt!! They paired up with a Prep and a Kindy and went on a search around the school looking for clues e.g. Buzz! Buzz! Buzz! Can you find my sweet home! (Yes, it was a bee hive!). Each Kindy student opened the envelope and the Prep “read” out the clue !! Well, we had many a keen eye spotting the next clue prior to it happening. We will have to be a little more crafty next year when hiding them! Each child received a surprise egg and Remi kindly brought some Easter treats to share with her friends also!! Everyone had a great time co-operating together, sharing, taking turns and looking after their buddy.
The Pelican children also practised their ball skills together and continued learning to cooperate, collaborate, share and take turns during their games by sharing a number of balls amongst each other. They also practised their relay skills by passing the ball to another friend and then going to the back of the line (a lot of thought is required for this)!
Well done Pelicans!
The Pelicans welcome you to 2022
Cooking and baking is a much loved activity by the Pelican students (and teachers!) and 2022 is no different for these Early Learners. Yummy Cupcakes!
In term 1, the Pelicans had a lovely time travelling around the different countries in Cycle 1 during Multicultural Day. They visited the Netherlands, China, New Zealand and their own state of Queensland-Australia! During their visits to each class they had an experience of the culture and diversity found in each country, from different clothes, languages and foods! What fun they had while flying around!
To finish off the term, the Pelican children went to see a production by Renata to learn about the seasons!! She was very entertaining and engaged the children throughout with her puppets, stories, songs and visual aids. They thoroughly enjoyed their time with her!
Have a great Easter from the Pelicans
The Pelicans enjoy a special incursion!
The Pelican class were so lucky to have a wonderful incursion from Geckoes Wildlife experience with all the other Cycle 1s. What a lovely time everyone had patting and learning about the animals. There were a number of animals and Martin the presenter and owner showed the children a little Bettong, a Carpet Python, a Tawny Frogmouth, a black green tree frog (he stuck to the window and then started sliding down!!), a Shingle Back Lizard and a Bearded Dragon, a Long Necked Turtle and salt water Crocodile! They all got to pat a Tasmanian wombat called Bumpy and she was so content to allow them all to stroke her head! The children all had an incredible experience and learnt a lot, some overcoming some fears around patting animals and others observing while learning.
The Pelican class have visitors!
Charlotte brought her guinea pigs – Vegemite and Pickles – in for show and share. The Pelican children were very excited about holding them and grooming them with the brush. They learnt about what they ate and how to look after them. It was a very exciting visit! Thank you, Charlotte!
The Pelicans are baking!
On Tuesdays, the Pelicans enjoy a baking class. They learn about hygiene during baking, using wet and dry ingredients, measuring, and mixing. The best part about it all is icing and eating their creations! Important life skills such as waiting your turn, being mindful of others and developing patience are all practised during this activity. Well done Pelicans!

Welcome Pelicans!
Welcome to all our returning and new Pelican (1C) families! The children are settling in and getting acquainted with the activities in the room and one another. There is a lot of exciting areas to explore this term, we are looking at the ocean, the invertebrates and vertebrates found in the ocean, land invertebrates, shells and lots of other themes that arise during the term! We are looking forward to lots of learning, exploration and fun!
Christmas Bags 2020
Our Pelican students have been anticipating opening up their Christmas bags. Each child wrote a card for their friends and placed it in the bag. Some contained little gifts like bon bons, stamps, rubbers, lollies, keyrings, bows, etc. and the teachers gave them a little gift also. It was a highly excited group that finally got to open all their treasures and see what was inside their bags. The children read the cards or had them read to them and were very excited to both give and receive. What a lovely experience. We wish all the Pelicans and their families a joyous and happy Holiday season and look forward to having the children back in 2021!! Thank you from Kathryn and Lisa.
Seed Pod Stars 2020
Pelican learners used seed pods to make a native star for their Christmas tree.
Star Wands 2020
The Pelicans were very excited to make some Star wands over the Festive season. A lot of time and energy was spent selecting colours and embellishments! Well done Pelicans!
Salt Dough Ornaments 2020
Our students got into the Christmas spirit by making some Salt dough ornaments to put on their Christmas trees. A lot of planning and thought went into the colours and decorations. They all had a lot of fun creating their ornaments!
Sunflower 2020
A giant sunflower is the focus of our Pelicans at the moment and the students have been watching it grow taller and taller over the last few weeks. The Pelicans and I have been measuring the height against my height to see the progress of the growth. It was highly exciting when the sunflower grew taller than me and finally even taller than when I had my hands above my head!! They have been observing the bud with anticipation to see when the flower would start opening up! What a day when the beautiful yellow petals showed themselves! They have watched the head grow bigger and the bees visit the centre. It has been a lovely learning experience for them. The group photo was taken on a very hot day and it is not the best, but amusing!!!
Christmas Baking
The Pelicans continued the tradition of making gingerbread people and star cookies. It was a bit different this year as we didn’t have parent helpers and had to fit all the children in during the morning to make their cookies and in the afternoon to ice them. The children had fun and thoroughly enjoyed eating their efforts. They were very cooperative with one another and waited their turns beautifully, well done, Pelican children!!
Starry Starry Night
Meg spent the day in the Pelican room and did a lovely art activity with the children. They looked at Vincent Van Gogh’s, Starry Starry Night and made their own version using pastels and black paper. They children were very creative.
NAIDOC Week
The children learnt about the importance of Naidoc week in the Pelican room. They had an opportunity to learn what the different symbols mean in the Aboriginal culture and tried some dot paintings.
Volcano Experiment
The Pelican children did an experiment to see how the lava flowed from an erupting volcano. They learnt about volcanos and the different types and how they functioned. Each child had a turn and there were lots of attentive children watching to see how the bicarb reacted with the vinegar and food colouring to flow down the “volcano!”
What a fun way to learn about the world around them!
Grandparents Day 2020
The Pelican children made their grandparents a foot book mark. They found having their foot painted very ticklish. The bookmark said, “When you stop reading your good book, just hold your place with my little foot. Happy Grandparent’s Day!” They enjoyed making this gift for their grandparent.
Indigenous aRT tRAIL 2020
The Pelican class went on another adventure to follow the indigenous ARt tRAIL through the school. They learnt about many different remote Aboriginal communities found throughout Australia and how they produced their art. The children found the art works interesting and this encouraged them to try their hand at making their own interpretation of the art they had seen. They spent time thinking about what they were drawing and the story attached to their drawings. The Pelican’s showed respect and diligence throughout their ARt tRAIL. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to see such lovely art works outside of an art gallery or museum. It was really appreciated!
Father's Day September 2020
The Pelican children made their fathers a drinks coaster with mosaics and they did a questionnaire about all their fathers favourite things. The children really enjoyed making their gifts, taking the time to make a card and decorate their wrappings. I’m sure all the Fathers had a great Father’s day!!
Multicultural Day Thursday 3rd September 2020
The Pelican children had a lovely Multicultural day today. They flew as a Pelican squadron to Brazil, Peru, New Zealand and Thailand and entered each country using their passports. There were many different foods to try, crafts to make and lots of new facts to learn about each country. The children all sang the song “Your hand in my hand,” together with the whole school. Everyone has had a lovely fun filled day!
Cross Country
The Pelican children ran their cross country today (Friday, 21st August). They put a lot of effort into their run and some managed one, two or three laps depending on their age and enthusiasm.
Well done Pelicans, all your practise has paid off!!!
Making Snacks
The Pelican children had a lovely time preparing a snack for themselves. They had to use their listening and spreading skills! There were a lot of excited children.
Term 3 Yoga with Stevie-Jae
Stevie-Jae from Studio Space gave the Pelican children a demonstration on Yoga. The children had a great time following her, having fun and participating in a very interactive session. She made sure that all the children’s ages and levels were catered for. Thanks Stevie for a great afternoon.
Term 3 Gardening
The Pelican children were given some flower and vegetable seeds to plant that were harvested from Erin. They had an opportunity to plant the seeds into their garden and will assist with watering, weeding and ensuring that they thrive through the next few weeks. Hopefully some of them pop up during the coming weeks.
Term 3 Learning
The Pelican children have been settling back into their classroom routine with great enthusiasm. They are engaging with the activities found in the room. This term so far they are concentrating on learning about South America, the season of winter, the lifecycle of a turtle and cocoa beans, and classifying land, air and water transport. They have many more exciting things to come in the following weeks. The PREPS are also working on their presentations about Brazil which they will be sharing with the other Cycle 1s at Multicultural day. Go Pelicans!!!
Pencil Grip
Just wanted to send a couple of pics of Lachie and his pencil grasp… majority of the time he is in a closed fist. But he also adjusted his grip as seen in the pic by himself…I’m hoping it’s all a normal part of development. 😊
Lachie is really looking forward to coming back to school next week!
Thanks for all of the resources! The yoga cards are a hit!! I’ve laminated them and both Charlotte and Lachlan have used them everyday since!
I really appreciate the time and effort put into the packs. 😊
ANZAC Day 2020
We learned about the symbol of Rosemary for ANZAC day and made our wreath using the rosemary we harvested from the school garden, then we placed painted poppies on our wreath. Anzac biscuits were also baked as a part of our commemorations.
Working from Home
Our Pelican students working from home.
Scavenger Hunt and Binocular Making
Maisie and Charlotte made binoculars to use in their scavenger hunt. They took lots of time creating their binoculars and then enjoyed finding the different items in the playground. What fun!!!
Easter 2020
The Pelican children joined the other Cycle 1 children for an Easter egg hunt. They all had to hunt for 2 chocolates and an Easter egg pot decoration. They had great fun and put their items in their bags! There was a lot of excitement among the children and it was a lovely group activity.
Radish Seed Sowing
The Pelican class sowed radish seeds into their community garden to ensure that there is a crop until we can plant again next term in the cooler months of autumn. The children all had a turn throwing the seeds onto the newly turned over soil. It was extremely hot work!!
Corn Harvest
The Pelican children had a lovely afternoon harvesting the corn that has been growing in their Community garden over the summer. They learnt how the tassels contain pollen that falls down and is carried to the silks by the wind. This is why corn is planted close together. The silks flutter about in the wind to catch drifting pollen. The surface of each silk has tiny hairlike receptors to hold the pollen once it lands. It then travels down the silk to the kernel area, where fertilization occurs. Once pollination takes place, the kernels begin to develop on each cob.
Each child got to take a corn off the plant and hopefully experienced eating it at home.
Thanks to our parent helpers for keeping the corn alive during the hot summer, especially Erin and Barb!
