Late last year, our Principal Yvonne sat down with Moreton News to talk about Caboolture Montessori School and the following podcast was produced. We hope you enjoy listening to it.
Although many people understand Montessori to mean ‘alternative‘ Yvonne explained that this inaccurate narrative around the philosophy is one of the reasons why Montessori is misunderstood. The Podcast examines the origin of the philosophy and what it means when we say the curriculum is based on science.
The classrooms have different age groups and this enables some significant differences in how students learn compared to traditional schooling. Learning from peers is amplified and work is directed by their own interests. Therefore the Montessori student is motivated to learn, is busy and also this tends to alleviate many discipline issues. Although students have a certain amount of freedom in terms of their own decision-making, there are high academic expectations on the students and they are held to account within tight guidelines from their highly trained teachers. This contradicts the narrative of ‘alternative’ where some parents will expect that students wander around the grounds without guidance.
