Seahorses Term 2, 2024

During Term 2, the Seahorses continued their work with a broad range of Montessori materials to support curriculum areas.  They used the Bead Chain, The Grammar Box and the Time Line of Life.  The Sea Horses also enjoyed working collaboratively and cooperating in their projects.

On any given moment in a Montessori classroom, children may be working on a diverse range of activities. Here are some photos taken during Term 2 with just some of the activities underway in 2A. Various children were working individually or in pairs, on a range of activities such as:

  • Pin map – a classic Montessori Geography material
  • Reading phonograms – a Montessori language material which supports spelling and reading. This child was reading examples of the different ways to spell the long “o” sound.
  • Grammar activities – Some Year 1 students were using card material to read and act-out verbs. This emphasises that verbs are an “action” word.
  • Fraction domino game – used as a co-operative game to support students’ understanding of fraction concepts.
  • Recording observations – Groups of students have started germinating bean seeds and are recording their observations.
  • Exploring visual texture – Students are creating samples of visual texture by using a range of materials to apply paint.
  • Weaving – As part of Cycle 2 arts rotations, students practised weaving, developing fine motor skills, aesthetic discrimination and executive planning skills.

Great work in Term 2,  Sea Horses!

Seahorses Term 1 2024

During Term 1, the Seahorses have been working with a range of Montessori materials to support curriculum areas.  These included fractions, operations, spelling and grammar. The students also learned about Time Management, using a checklist as a tool to help them prioritise their tasks. The students also regularly reached out to their peers to ask for help if they needed it.

To prepare for Multicultural day, middles and seniors developed their mapping skills and practiced producing beautiful maps. The seniors have been leading the way in establishing the routine for independently painting and cleaning up.

Great work this term,  Sea Horses!

Seahorses highlight of 2021

This amazing piece of artwork from our Seahorses class has a great story.
The class collaborated with a group in Mezzolombardo in Italy to create this wonderful piece.  A total of 140 children worked together to create four beautiful dragons.  When the children were asked which blessings they would like to bring into their lives, after thinking about it, they chose the blessings of Family, Friends, Good Luck, Love and Adventure.  Then the students hand-painted the Chinese character for these words on every plate in the bodies of each of the four dragons.
What a great example of collaboration. Give 2A a digital clap, everyone! Great work!

Week 1 Term 3, 2020

Our Cycle Two children began preparing our garden to plant flowers as part of the practical life education.  This teaches the Seahorses to appreciate nature and love our beautiful outdoors. Their learning also includes control of movement and looking after themselves as they become familiar with their environment.  They grow in independence and self-control.   The chickens certainly enjoyed the weeds and the attention too and the Seahorses showed great care. Great work Seahorses!

Term 2, 2020

The Seahorses love using the Montessori Maths and Language materials found around their classroom. This term they have been consolidating their learning in these areas as taught by Maria Montessori using tangible items to help them to understand the abstract ideas involved in Maths.  They also learn to wait their turn and to return the materials to where they found them so that the next student is able to use them too.  This teaches them orderliness and respect for the materials as well as the next student.  It also teaches them that we need to look after our things, whether at home or at school, so that they don’t get broken or destroyed.

Well done Seahorses. You have learned well!
