Before joining CMS in 2018 I have been fortunate that teaching has taken me to many different places and experiences. I graduated from my Bachelor of Education in 2001 and my first job was a grade 5/6 at a state primary school in Victoria. From there I moved to the UK where I worked in primary schools, PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties) schools and SEP (Special Education Programs) in mainstream schools. I did some nanny work in London and Dubai. During the summer months, I had a great time running a Kid’s Club at a holiday resort in Greece.
When I returned to Australia, I worked in Special Schools and Specialist Developmental Schools in Victoria before having my son in. We moved to Queensland not long after and I have worked as a relief teacher in many primary and special schools in the local area. Knowing my son likes to ask big questions, I looked at alternatives to the mainstream for him and was very grateful he was accepted at CMS.
Once I had done relief work at CMS I didn’t want to leave! I love the peaceful atmosphere and grounds but mostly I love the way I can form strong relationships with the children through the three year cycle. The advantages this gives me to help support their social/emotional development and learning is huge. I also love that they are allowed to develop in their own time.
Having covered both teacher and assistant roles, I have found that working as a teacher assistant gives me better work/life balance. Since starting at CMS our family has bought our property and built a house, adding animals to the mix. Between that and my son’s sport, we are always busy!
