In June 2013 I met with CMS’s Learning Enhancement Director, Carmel, to discuss taking on the position of supporting children with high functioning autism to maximise their social, emotional and intellectual engagement at our school. I’d been working primarily with parents for 4 years as one of the original members of the Early Years Centre team in Caboolture. Prior to that I’d worked with children with additional needs at Caboolture East State School for 8 years and my heart was driven to return to working directly with children.
Imagine my joy and excitement when I first observed the Cycle 1 classroom I was to work in! The natural environment, the exquisite materials and, most importantly, the children calmly engrossed in their own learning journey. It made my heart sing.
As I wasn’t Montessori trained, Carmel and Yvonne provided reading and opportunities to study. Also, I had a number of wonderfully generous teachers who helped me align my skills with Montessori methodology. It was a values judgement to move from mainstream schooling to embrace Montessori education for all children and everyday I’m grateful for the making this decision.
